Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)

Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)

OVERVIEW

Does the shape of your ears affect how you feel about your physical appearance? An appointment with a board-certified plastic surgeon can help determine whether an otoplasty or cosmetic ear surgery may be the right treatment for you.

What is Otoplasty?

Commonly known as cosmetic ear surgery, otoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that is done to correct ear conditions that affect the shape, size, and position of your ears.

While otoplasty is typically recommended for people with protruding ears, a condition known as prominauris, it can also be used to correct shell ears or excessively large ear lobes.

What does Otoplasty Help?

Surgery is typically recommended for patients with irregularities in the shape, positioning, and size of their ears and lobes. Otoplasty can be the right choice for you if you have:

  • Cupped, small ears
  • Shell ears
  • Large earlobes
  • Prominent, protruding ears
  • Creased lobes
  • Lop ears, where the tip of your ear folds down and forwards
  • No ears (are born without them)
  • An ear injury that damages your ears

Is Otoplasty For You?

If you are uneasy or embarrassed about the shape or position of your ears, then otoplasty may be right for you. An appointment with a board-certified plastic surgeon can help determine that.

During your appointment, the doctor will assess your overall health and history of illness. Cosmetic ear surgery can be performed after the ears have finished developing, from age five and on into adulthood, and will be considered if:

  • Your ears prominently stick out
  • You have ear deformities
  • Your ears are too large for the shape of your head

Treatment for Otoplasty is Safe When Performed by a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon

Depending on the reason for your otoplasty, your ear cartilage may be cut, folded, or stitched to get the desired shape and outcome.

Most patients require local anesthesia during the procedure, which typically lasts for two to three hours. Children, however, are more likely to receive general anesthesia during their otoplasty to prevent movement during the surgery.

The initial recovery period for otoplasty is a week, but proper healing of your ears and incision can take up to three weeks. Scarring is minimal, typically positioned behind the ear, and will fade over time.
